When cargo crosses borders, the choice between air and ocean freight shapes your cost and your timeline. Neither is always better — it depends on what you're shipping and how fast it needs to arrive.
Air freight: speed over everything
Air is the fastest way to move goods internationally, with transit measured in days. It suits high-value, perishable or urgent cargo where the cost of delay outweighs the premium freight rate.
Ocean freight: scale and economy
Ocean moves far larger volumes at a fraction of the per-unit cost. For heavy, bulky or non-urgent shipments — and for break-bulk and bulk-liquid cargo — sea is almost always the economical choice.
A quick decision framework
Ask three questions: How urgent is it? How much does it weigh and measure? What is it worth? Urgent, light and high-value leans air; flexible, heavy and bulk leans ocean. Many supply chains use both, matched shipment by shipment.
